It is known that Facebook has created a group of developers within the company, which will “explore blockchain technology” under the leadership of Vice President David Marcus, but recent personnel changes apparently indicate a more serious approach to this technology. According to Techcrunch, Evan Cheng, technical Director of Facebook, moved to the position of Director of the blockchain.
A reputable computer specialist, he was responsible for programming languages and execution environment in the company. Prior to that, Cheng spent nearly a decade at Apple, mostly as a senior Manager, working on low-level tools, compilers and other development. He acted as adviser on multiple blockchain startups, among which Zilliqa and ChainLink.
Given the authority of Cheng (who knows more than anyone in the company, performance and scalability), this may signal that the creation of a group blockchain developers — not just another research project. We note that recently the former Vice-President of the Instagram product Kevin Weil took the post of Vice-President, blockchain-products in Facebook.
