The floating drone from Airalab revealed critically low oxygen levels in the Volga river

Team Airalab tested Autonomous sensor platforms that collect data about the degree of contamination of the water. The results of the study were presented at the summer school “Ribonomic 2018” was held in Tolyatti from 20 to 26 August.

As told by the engineer-ecologist of the project Aziz Oripov., measurements of the surface layer water of the Volga, at a depth of two meters, were made at the end of July at the Italian beach Togliatti. The drone was equipped with sensors measuring the content of nitrogen-containing substances (NO3-, NO2-, NH4+), dissolved oxygen, turbidity and water temperature.

“The most reliable information we have received on hydrogen characteristics and content of dissolved oxygen in the water. The studied period has a very low pH, although it is acceptable for humans and fish is from 6.5 to 8.5 pH. An acidic environment is fraught for human skin irritation, and fish creates unfavorable conditions for survival. Dissolved oxygen at a rate of from 5 to 14 mg/liter in river water averaged 0.25 mg/liter, and this suggests that the water contains a large amount of gray-green and brown algae, which absorb it”, — said Aziz Oripov..

She added that the algae not only distinguish 300 species of substances, most of which are poisonous, but also reduce the penetration of sunlight to the bottom of the reservoir, which entails a lack of oxygen and causes the death of plants and fish, as well as the active formation of hydrogen sulfide, methane, and greenhouse gases.

“In addition, there is a trend increase in the number of antibiotics in water, which at elevated concentrations in water can change the DNA of a fish and result in different mutation,” she said.

According to the Executive Director Airalab Rus Ivan Petrov, water pollution in the Volga basin due to the overabundance of industrial, transport, municipal and agricultural drains. In General, the environmental load on the Volga and its surrounding area exceeded eight times.

“Smart city is not possible without relevant and immediate information. The key problem is that the sensors in all known cases are purchased and controlled by the municipalities. Municipal studies are extremely expensive and largely ineffective — in one season the ship measures at best 1000 points across the Volga, and the population often find out the results with a delay of one year. But I’m not interested to know what I already poisoned, it is important for me to know is it worth now to go to the river and jeopardize their health.

Airalab formulated the case in a compact self-managed aquatic drone that are not comparable to cheaper huge ships. Drone can go into the coastal zone, because it has no restrictions on its lees, and is returned directly into the hands of the owner. It can float at the given coordinates and does not need a crew, which must contain”, — said Ivan Petrov.

We add that the case of the floating drone-ecologist made of fiberglass, and the top is sealed the control unit has two solar panels, which ensures its autonomy — of the battery on a cloudy day will be enough for 4-6 hours of full work. The information from the sensors of the drone not only saves on removable media, protected from moisture, but in online mode transmits the obtained parameters to the network.

“You’re buying this information from any free drone in the network “Ribonomic” and receive it with a delay time of sailing, not in a month. You need only a few clicks on the screen and no more formal procedures,” — said Petrov.

Safety and data immutability is ensured by the technology of the blockchain.

“Contract system based on network “Ribonomic” saves the data arising in the process of work in the public blockchain. Each swim creates a separate contract obligations, where and are all collected in the order fulfillment process the data. They do not require additional processing and are finite, and therefore rule out manipulation and distortion of socially important information”, — explained the developer of IT-solutions drone Alisher Khasanov.

In the future, thanks to the concept of a floating drone-ecologist, scientific organizations will have modern and mobile monitoring tools, the power will be wide monitoring network that can detect and localize the sources of pollution to deal with them, and the business, in turn, can become one of the monitoring entities, surrendering Areda their equipment or selling the data.

We will add that in the future, as the drone equipment additional equipment you plan to use the sensors to determine the content of ions of heavy metals (iron, cadmium, copper, arsenic, Nickel, mercury, lead, zinc and chromium) for a full assessment of the reservoir.

ForkLog previously reported that in the framework of the summer school “Ribonomic 2018” flying drones learned to navigate a route through the exclusion zone.
