The naval forces of the USA are exploring the potential of blockchain technology

The command of the aviation forces of the Navy (NAVAIR), which provides material support for aircraft and airborne weapon system for the Navy, on September 21 issued a press release in which it announced that it was examining the blockchain. First of all, it wants to find out whether new technology is more efficient than existing methods and cost-to track the status of parts of military aircraft throughout their life cycles.

In NAVAIR explain:

Monitoring the origin and history of parts of aircraft that are critical to successful flight, is a resource-intensive process that increases the cost of fleet management.

In existing systems the condition of the parts is tracked through paper media, and information manually entered in a database. Recently, however, the Navy has launched the process of exploring blockchain technology, which it hopes to trust the state of naval aviation.

For the sake of the team in the centre of the readiness of the fleet South— West (Fleet Readiness Center Southwest) NAVAIR signed a partnership agreement with Indiana Technology and Manufacturing Companies (ITAMCO) the use of Chain SIMBA — owned by the company platform, developed in collaboration with DARPA.

The IMF experts are particularly interested in protocols SIMBA Chain, which, they say, capable of “quick and safe way to play sets with large amounts of data”. The partners hope eventually to create a conceptual system of supply based on the blockchain.

Experimental verification of the concept will be carried out in a controlled chain mechanism of consensus, which, according to representatives of NAVAIR, requires less computing power than systems based on Proof— of— Work, like the one that uses bitcoin.

The press release says that while there are unresolved difficulties. Distributed supply chain increases vulnerability to attacks from the outside, so the center of attention of specialists is cyber security.

The team of researchers believes that the increased visibility and the ability to control the supply chain will help NAVAIR to support the mission of the air force, improving reliability and reducing costs.
